Description
The New York City Department of Transportation recognizes 2,027 bridges within city limits. The East River is home to the Brooklyn, Manhattan, Williamsburg, Queensboro, Roosevelt Island, Triborough, Hell Gate, Bronx-Whitestone, and Throgs Neck Bridges. The George Washington crosses the Hudson River and the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge crosses the Narrows, connecting Staten Island to Brooklyn. The Harlem River is crossed by high-level arch bridges (like the Washington and High Bridges) and low, movable bridges (like Macomb’s Dam and Park Avenue). Other bridges carry automobiles, people, and trains across Jamaica Bay, Newtown Creek, Flushing River, Spuyten Duyvil Creek, other waterways, street crossings, and railroads.
